I\u2019ve gotten properly into my routine now\u2014breakfast accompanied by a TV show, which today was Orange is the New Black<\/a><\/em>. I packed my bag and grabbed a towel from the room, making sure to hang the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door so housekeeping wouldn’t notice a towel missing. I left around half past ten and made my way to Mandraki Marina for the day trip to Lindos. It was cloudy outside, so thankfully it wasn’t quite as hot as I had initially feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s only a few minutes’ walk to the marina, but when I found what I assumed was the counter to pay the remainder of the ticket fee, the queue was about 150 metres long. I really don’t understand why I couldn’t just pay the full amount on the website and skip the line altogether! I joined the queue at twenty-to-eleven, reached the kiosk around eleven, and boarded two minutes later. I found a seat on the upper deck next to an elderly couple. When I asked if the seat was taken, they answered, “I don’t know, but no one is sitting here now!”<\/em> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was a bit skeptical, but we departed right on time at eleven. Luckily, not everyone arrived fifteen minutes before departure. It\u2019s certainly a bit different from Sweden or the US\u2014no safety briefing, no warning signs, no instructions whatsoever. Just push back, blow the horn, and off we go! The combination of wind and engine noise was pretty intense, so I put on my headphones and listened to a podcast (USA-podden<\/a>) to drown out the roar. It was nice having cell coverage the entire way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About half an hour into the journey, the captain and a crewmate started staring intently at the dashboard and over the side, looking either worried or curious (hard to tell apart). The captain made a couple of phone calls. Doing a rough estimate of our covered distance on Google Maps, it looked like we wouldn’t make the trip in 60 minutes, which might have been what they were checking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We eventually arrived around twenty past twelve. No other issues had come up, so perhaps it was just the headwind that slowed us down. As we disembarked, a sign indicated that the boat would leave four hours after arrival, with boarding starting thirty minutes prior. Fair enough!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I set off towards the Acropolis, which is known to be a decent climb. Some sections were fairly steep, but most of it consisted of stairs or paved paths\u2014nothing like my previous work trip to Skuleskogens National Park<\/a> or hiking with my cousin and brother in Sundsvall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to my watch, it took 20 minutes to reach the top, covering a distance of 1 kilometre with an elevation gain of 115 metres. I have decent leg strength, but my cardio isn’t great! Still, plenty of other people were having a much tougher time than I was. It was hot even without direct sun, which spent most of the time hidden behind light clouds, and there was almost no breeze at all\u2014that was probably the hardest part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Normally, there\u2019s an entrance fee of \u20ac20, but since it\u2019s the European Heritage Days weekend, admission was completely free\u2014yay! Inside the Acropolis, there wasn’t much guidance on where to go, so visitors scattered everywhere. Some sections had quite narrow pathways or staircases without railings. It was fascinating to explore, but the real highlight was the sweeping view over Lindos, St. Paul’s Bay, and the open sea. Staff with whistles were quick to alert people whenever anyone stepped where they shouldn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
